How to Deal Yourself as a Transgender Patient

A transgender like you often finds it difficult to ask for medical attention to any health care provider due to misconceptions, false judgment, and sometimes harassment by the healthcare professionals in the hospital or clinic.

Here are some ways to deal with it as a transgender patient:

Firstly, you must be specific for your reason for asking their medical help or treatment. If you are having a stomachache for example then that’s the only thing you will say to them. If ever your gender is being asked, tell them it doesn’t matter coz all you need is their intervention for stomachache. When they take patient’s history from you and ask you something below the belt that sounds gender offending, you can opt not to answer the question. Then make sure to know his/her name and write a letter of the complaint pertaining to his/her way of questioning to you later on.

Inevitably, even in a healthcare setting, some transgender healthcare professionals love to make fun of you. In case you are asked to undress for some reason that is not related to your medical complaints, then you have the right to disobey and be it known to him/her your patient’s right to privacy.
