One of the challenges you will face as a transgender is explaining it to your child. You owe your child an explanation because he/she has the right to know what’s going on with your life. You are his/her biggest influence and your child has to understand every part of you including you being a transgender.
You need to explain your gender to your child in a way that he will understand. You can start it off by explaining what biological sex is. Then get across the definition of gender identity and gender expression. Help them learn that gender identity is basically how one feels and gender expression is how one prefers to be seen based on his/her gender identity.
Kids may or may not fully understand what these things mean. It may take them a while to get the point but what’s important is that your child feels you are open about it and you are willing to help them catch on. Do not forget to put emphasis that no matter what your gender is, your love for your child is what matters most in the world. Put across that it is always good to let the world see the real you as long as you’re not hurting anyone.
